Fighting For Equal Rights In A Public School Bathroom
December 2, 2016 by Laila Azmy
Some people think that a public school bathroom is a nasty place filled with bugs, mice, rats, and other critters. Just to get essential business done. But to a transgender child, it can be much more.
According to multiple studies conducted by The Daily Beast and the Human Rights Campaign, restricting transgender kids from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with increases the already high probability of suicide. In Tennessee, a transgender teen named Henry Seaton testified to state legislators that if a bill was passed that forced trans kids to use the bathroom of their biological gender, than suicide rates would climb. “When you don’t have a restroom to use, that really encourages those numbers to increase exponentially,” he says.
The Tennessee legislators didn’t listen. They are in the process of banning transgender students to use the bathrooms of their choice. This is ridiculous! How can you restrict children from being who they are? If a boy says that he is a girl, then trust he knows who he is. If that same child wants to use the bathroom of their choice, then let them! They are individuals, and if they identify with another gender, than they deserve to feel accepted, and to feel the comforts of love and support.
To a trans child, using the bathroom of the gender they identify with can be huge. They would feel like they are finally accepted as a girl/boy. I strongly believe transgender kids should be able to use the bathroom of their choice.
Apart from suicide rates, there is a law called Title IX, that prohibits sex discrimination in any educational facility or program. So not only is not allowing transgender girls and boys to use the bathroom of their choice horrible, it’s breaking the law. Yes, prohibiting trans kids from using a bathroom of their choosing is sex discrimination.
The law states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Basically, it prohibits discrimination of gender in schools. So, if transgender kids are not allowed the benefits of acceptance by being allowed to use the bathrooms of their choice, then that’s breaking the law!
I am a proud feminist, so I naturally believe in equal rights, but now even more so. Being transgender is not something to be ashamed about, and many people are not giving transgender people the rights they deserve. It is a natural right that someone has to be respected and loved for who they are.
Some parents are concerned that the trans kids will disregard the privacy of their children, but their have been zero reported incidents of this. Others are worried that trans kids are subject to harassment in the restrooms of their choice, but most are bullied in the bathroom of their biological gender as well. People need to remember that for every bully, there is a kind, supportive friend willing to help.
It is my dream, my hope, that transgender kids will be allowed to use the restroom of their choice. In doing this, we are one step closer to acceptance and love. And every person, no matter their sex, race, or background, deserves to be loved.
Thoughts on the 2016 Presidential Election
December 2, 2016 by Amelia Jackson
As all of America knows, the 2016 Election was the harshest, and most tense election yet. Between the two frontrunners, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and the Republican nominee Donald Trump, most Americans felt unsure about who to vote for. With their similarities, and differences, both wanted, badly, to become president.
Hillary Clinton shared three of her top campaign promises at many of her events: that women and men should be equal, gun control should be enforced, and women should have control over their pregnancies. “If you’re running for president, you should say what you want to do and how you will get it done," Hillary Clinton stated in her June 27 speech.
Trump campaigned on different issues. He has stated, “I am for all Americans...” and that he wants to “represent every citizen of our land.” His campaign promised to lower taxes, build a wall between Mexico and America, and send illegal immigrants out of this country.
Americans appear to be divided, just like these two candidates, but only one of the two became America’s President-elect. Although Hillary Clinton has, at the time of publication, won the popular vote in the election with over 2 million more votes, Donald Trump still won the election by beating Hillary Clinton in electoral votes (279 to 228).
Some say America was tricked by the media and polsters into believing that Hillary Clinton would surely win, with a 99% chance up until election day. There are still questions surrounding the entire election process. While there may be answers to many of our country's greatest problems, when it comes to the election system it seems that some problems just can not be solved.
The Dirty Truth about our Spray Tan President
January 2, 2017 by Laila Azmy
We all know the results of the 2016 presidential election by now. I shudder to hear the words “president” and “Trump” in the same sentence. Why did we elect this man for president, America? If you don’t know the rundown of President-elect Donald Trump, then let me tell you some disturbing facts about his misogynistic and racist past.
Sexism and misogyny have always been a problem in America, but now even more so. We have a president who called changing the diapers of a baby, “A woman’s job.” The only reason that parents sign up to be parents is that they want to share the responsibility of raising a child. Almost every parent agrees with this principle. Women are not to be held responsible for every task of being a caregiver. In a 1991 Esquire magazine profile, Trump also gave a completely misogynist comment about his recent bad press. “It really doesn’t matter what they write,” he remaked, adding, “As long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of [derogatory word]. But she’s got to be young and beautiful.” First off, that is entirely disgusting. Women are strong, not just for show. We can be anything that we want to be, not some man’s puppets. Secondly, you should not fall in love with a woman just because of her beauty. You should love her because of the qualities that matter, like her smile, her sense of humor, and her kindness.
Trump is also racist. Don’t believe me? Well, in 1973, his real estate company, Trump Management Corporation, was sued by the Justice Department for not renting to black people, and telling them that apartments were “not available.” Okay, let us stop here. It is completely absurd to give someone privileges just because they have a certain skin color. But it gets worse. Donald Trump said that these accusations were “absolutely ridiculous,” and sued the Justice Department right back! If you think this is where our story stops, oh no, there’s more. Two years later, and Trump Management Corporation settled the original lawsuit without admitting to doing anything wrong, and promised they would never discriminate against black people. Yet, three years after that, Trump Management Corporation got sued by the Justice Department once again for doing the exact same thing. If you make a mistake, you should be able to admit it and move on, and start being more careful to not make that mistake again. But to make the exact same racist mistake again takes things to a whole new level of horrible.
Another example is how one of Trump’s presidential rallies in Alabama turned sour very quickly. His supporters physically attacked an African-American man after he began chanting “black lives matter.” There is video evidence of this happening, and of the Trump supporters kicking the poor man after he was already on the ground. You may be asking, “How does this incident relate to Trump?” and I will provide you with an answer. The following day, Trump said, “Maybe [the protester] deserved to be roughed up. It was absolutely disgusting what he was doing.” Excuse me? Trump just called out a man on peacefully stating what he believed in. And, this furthermore shows his racist ways. Trump had mused that it was “absolutely disgusting” to say black lives matter. They do matter. Every life matters.
We just cannot have a leader who says these things. To be the United States President, you have to be strong of character, kind, sympathetic, environmentally conscious, and so many other qualities that Donald Trump does not possess. I hope for the sake of America that Trump can try to be that person.
